PHIL COLLINS RADIO INTERVIEW SPECIALS – Various Dates
THE REST OF MY RADIO SHOW COLLECTION
Now that you’ve had a chance to explore all of the Phil Collins pre-FM Radio Interview Specials, it’s time to look into those same type of shows for Phil’s band Genesis.
As previously mentioned, David Dunnington’s Complete Guide to Live Genesis Radio Shows (which can be found HERE) is a great source for live Genesis radio shows, but it lacks information on Phil Collins solo concert shows. What it lacks on the Genesis side of things is a complete listing of the pre-FM radio interview shows which have aired throughout the years. I have attempted to make up for that with this page.
As with the previously listed radio concerts, all of the interview specials are listed in order of broadcast date. And again, one of the main differences is that with these shows, the recording date was almost always unknown.
Here is a complete listing of all known radio interview shows with Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks, both with and without Phil being present. If you know of any that I’ve missed, please hit me up via the Contact Me page:
Nightbird & Company Program # 269 – 272 – Genesis, America, Chris Squire and David Pomeranz:
Narwood Productions Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
27 June – 18 July 1976
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
One of the earliest radio shows I’ve seen dates all the way back to 1976. This double LP show is from the U.S. Army Reserve, and features a weekly radio music and interview show with host Alison Steele, also known as Nightbird.
This particular episode features Bill Bruford and Phil talking about the Genesis album A TRICK OF THE TAIL. The other three sides are separate shows featuring America (this segment aired 4 July 1976), Chris Squire of Yes talking about his FISH OUT OF WATER solo album, (which aired 11 July 1976) and David Pomeranz (which aired 18 July 1976).
I do not have this item in my personal collection; information obtained from an eBay listing.
B.B.C. Rock Hour Special #243 – Genesis:
London Wavelength Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
25 October 1981
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
As was the case with the Phil Collins Interview Radio Specials list, the earliest pre-FM interview special focusing on Genesis that I have in my private collection comes to us courtesy of the B.B.C. Rock Hour Special series.
Host Richard Skinner interviews Phil, Mike and Tony and plays tracks from their 1981 album ABACAB. Tracks include Another Record, No Reply At All, Like It Or Not and Me And Sarah Jane among others. Great, rare item. From my personal collection.
Complete track listing can be found here:
The Robert Klein Radio Show:
Froben Production Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
31 December 1981
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
This is a music and interview special hosted by actor and comedian Robert Kline and featuring Genesis and actor Treat Williams. The entire show is recorded in front of a live studio audience.
Kline interviews Phil and Mike both and plays tracks from both Phil and Genesis albums. Tracks include Abacab, Turn It On Again, No Reply At All and I Missed Again. Klein also provides lots of (rather silly) comedic sections, including a lengthy opening monologue prior to introducing the boys from the band. Actor Treat Williams is featured in a section on Side C, but Phil and Mike are also present during his interview. Klein plays the title track from the HAIR original motion picture film soundtrack, of which Williams was a part. Side D is blank. From my personal collection.

Off The Record Hosted By Mary Turner #OTR 4-5 / #OTR 4-12:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Side A: Week of 5 April 1982 / Side B: Week of 12 April 1982
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
I originally thought this was an early incarnation of what would later become the double LP series known as Off The Record Specials with Mary Turner. Investigation has revealed that these single LP versions were actually daily shows which were sent to radio stations to supplement the double LP versions. Unlike those later shows, (which you will find many more of below) this LP does not contain complete music tracks, nor does it contain an opening segment, commercials or end credits. In addition, this LP does not have one continuous side on each side of the LP, rather, each track is its own separate “locked groove” or “lock banded” track which forced the disc jockey to lift the needle and place it down again in order to play each consecutive track.
Again, the single LP version of this show, known only as Off The Record, was a daily mini-show with ten (10) interview segments on each side of the LP, all introduced by Turner, for a total of twenty (20) interview segments. Each artists appeared several times on one side of the LP.
The tracks on this LP consist of Turner giving a brief explanation of what the next track contains, followed by brief interview segments from numerous artists. The artists featured on this single LP are Sting (of The Police), Bonnie Raitt, LaRoux, Mike Rutherford, Huey Lewis, and Rik Emmett (of Triumph). Mike’s four interview bits all appear on Side B. Any music featured was played behind the artist talking. Lastly, there are no commercial blocks presented on this LP.
Also of note, Side A of this LP was to be aired the week of 5 April 1982, while Side B was to be aired a week later, during the week of 12 April 1982. This also differs from later incarnations of this series, which usually contained two LPs which were to be aired on the same date.
From my personal collection.
Off The Record Specials With Mary Turner #82-39:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 3 October 1982
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
Host and Interviewer Mary Turner once again “meets” with the artist, this time, Mike Rutherford alone, but the discussion centers on all things Genesis related.
Commercial blocks and studio tracks are mixed with conversations between Rutherford and Turner. Another in the Off The Record Specials series.
Tracks include Paperlate, No Reply At All, Man On The Corner and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. From my personal collection.
NOTE: My copy did not come with a Cue Sheet.
Complete track listing can be found here:
Retro Rock – Genesis Show # RR 82-47/48:
Clayton Webster Corporation Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 15 November 1982
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
A two-hour hour radio show on two LPs hosted by Meg Griffin and featuring an unidentified male interviewer who provides a detailed history of the band while playing brief interview clips with all three members, plus Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett. Commercial blocks and studio tracks are included.
Tracks include Turn It On Again, Counting Out Time, Watcher Of The Skies, Abacab – Live, Paperlate, Misunderstanding – Live and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. I do not have this set in my personal collection; but I do have a torrent of this show, which includes the entire broadcast taken directly from the pre-FM LPs.
Off The Record Specials With Mary Turner #83-30
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 18 July 1983
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
This is an identical double LP set as the OTRSP #82-39 listed above, repackaged for broadcast in July of 1983. It was not uncommon for this series to re-use show material multiple times, as was the case here.
Tracks include Squonk, Robbery, Assault And Battery, Misunderstanding and I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe). I do not have this set in my collection; information obtained from an eBay listing.
Rolling Stone Magazine’s Continuous History Of Rock And Roll #83-94:
ABC Rock Radio Network Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 24 July 1983
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
This show is one hour in length, but unlike most radio programs of the day which compressed the hour show into 30 minute sides of one LP, this show comes on two LPs. The show features several interview segments covering topics such as the history of the band, Genesis without Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett and Tony Banks solo projects.
Tracks include Abacab, Paperlate, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and I Missed Again.
From my personal collection.
This item is not currently listed on Discogs, so no link is available.
Genesis – Three Into One An Authorized 3 Hour Special:
London Wavelength Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day 1983
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
A gigantic, three hour, three LP broadcast containing a rare radio special from London Wavelength Records.
This is a very lengthy show which contains a detailed overview of the band’s history up to that point, as well as lots of information about each member’s solo career. The show is divided into three parts, one for each of the band members. Hour One (Sides A & B) focuses on Mike Rutherford, Hour Two (Sides C & D) on Phil Collins and Hour Three (Sides E & F) on Tony Banks.
Host Alan Freeman interviews all three band members and plays tracks from their 1983 self-titled album GENESIS, as well as multiple tracks from their respective solo endeavors.
Tracks include Illegal Alien, Taking It All Too Hard, Mama, Just A Job To Do, Silver Rainbow and Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea all from the “new” album. Solo tracks include Acting Very Strange, You Can’t Hurry Love, In The Air Tonight and Wicked Lady Theme.
Contains original commercial blocks for Maxell Tapes and nine pages of detailed timing sheets. The show comes stored in an LP box holding said Cue Sheets and three LP sleeves.
Great, rare item. From my personal collection.

Genesis – The Invisible Touch Interview Picture Disc:
Baktabak Records (BAK 2008)
Recording date:
16 June 1986
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day/Year
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
A limited edition, bootleg interview picture disc which contains a discussion with Phil and Tony regarding their 1986 release INVISIBLE TOUCH.
At the very beginning of the interview (which is the only track on the LP) you can hear the unknown interviewer list the date as June 16th. Clearly this is from 1986 as at about the 15:00 mark, Phil begins discussing songs like Invisible Touch. The boys also discuss touring, playing large arenas, album reviews and making their new album. There is no music presented on this disc. This exact interview was also released in 1994 on compact disc, and that listing can be seen further down this list. From my personal collection.

REX Rock Interview Show:
Unknown Record Company
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Weeks of 16 August –
14 September 1986
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
This is one of the rarer radio interview shows that I’ve ever seen. It is simply called REX, and contains ten (10) mini-shows on each side of the LP. Each mini-show featured an artist or group with an interview segment and commercial blocks, and each mini-show was slotted for a single day broadcast window. Radio stations would utilize the mini-show interview segments as a special attraction for their listeners, and it was often bits like this that would make the difference in a station’s drive for top ratings in their market.
This particular LP contained interview segments with Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Winwood, Tom Cohcrane, members of the band Bananarama, and others. There is a single interview segment on Side B, slotted for broadcast on 31 August 1986, which simply states: Balancing Genesis And Home Life. No indication is given if this is an interview with Phil, Mike or Tony… or all three. As I do not have this item in my collection, information is limited and was obtained from an eBay listing.
Off The Record Specials With Mary Turner #86-41:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 6 October 1986
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
Mary Turner (interviewer) “meets” with Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins, and the discussion centers on all things Genesis related. This was the very first OTRSP show I ever purchased.
Commercial blocks and studio tracks are mixed with conversations between Rutherford, Collins and Turner. Another in the Off The Record Specials series.
Tracks include Abacab, In Too Deep, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight and The Brazilian. From my personal collection.
Complete track listing can be found here:
Genesis – TONIGHT, TONIGHT, TONIGHT:
Atlantic Records (ST-PR-965- A-1/B-1-SP)
Exclusive Candid Interview – Limited Edition Vinyl
Recorded 1986
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
Host and Interviewer Dan Neer meets with Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks and discusses the history of Genesis and the band’s latest release (at that time), INVISIBLE TOUCH. Very similar in format to the COLLINS ON COLLINS radio promo release.
The LP was sent to radio stations under the Atlantic Records label, which makes it an “official release”, and therefore it is not hard to come by. Many listings for this exact LP still show up on eBay on a regular basis.
Side A of this recording features the Neer asking questions and the boys answering them. Side B features the answers only, which allowed DJ’s to create their own “live interview” as if the band members were right there with them in the studio. This LP does not contain any commercials or album tracks. From my personal collection.
Complete track listing can be found here:
Genesis – Solo And Together:
Radio International Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day 1986
pre-FM Double Vinyl LP
This is a double LP interview and music special produced by Radio International Records, the people who brought you the Rock Over London series of shows, and broadcast in 1986. Host Graham Dene plays pre-recorded interview clips and music from not only the band, but solo tracks by some of its members. There is much more music and far less interviews on this show than were presented on other programs that I have listed on this page, but it’s still a nice, rare set to have.
Tracks include Shock The Monkey, Silent Running, Abacab, Red Rain, The Hunter and When The Heart Rules The Mind (by GTR), Shortcut To Somewhere (by Tony Banks), and the 12″ remix versions of Mama, Sussudio and Sledgehammer.
A note about the release date: Nowhere on this show does any form of broadcast date appear. The listing on Discogs states it was released in August of 1986, however, there is no supporting evidence that I can find. Again, no dates are listed anywhere on the packaging, the Cue Sheets, the labels or the Matrix / Runouts. (The Runouts are simply: GENESIS SPECIAL S1 / S2 / S3 and S/4 respectively.) I am confident, however, that the show was released at some point in late ’86 given the inclusion of an Atlantic Records commercial advertising the band’s latest release (at that time) INVISIBLE TOUCH. This ad can be found in the commercial block at the end of Side C, during which, the announcer states: “Invisible Touch… new from Genesis.”

Masters Of Rock – Genesis:
Capitol Radio Ventures Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month / Day / Year (Possibly 1987)
pre-FM Single Compact Disc
This is a interview and music radio show from the Masters Of Rock series. Host and Interviewer David Jansen profiles the band ad plays interview bits from all three members. The show also contains commercials and studio tracks from several Genesis albums.
Some album tracks included are Land Of Confusion, Taking It All Too Hard, Abacab and Invisible Touch among others. I do not have this item in my personal collection, but I do have a torrent with the full contents of the disc.
*A note about the release date: The torrent that I downloaded did not contain any information about when this show originally aired, and the included images of the Cue Sheets do not provide any details either. I am assuming this aired sometime in 1987 or later given the heavy use of tracks from the INVISIBLE TOUCH album, but this is absolutely just a guess. It could have been released anytime between 1987 and 1991. I have placed the listing at the end of the 1987 shows as a place holder until more information is obtained.
Star Trak Profiles #88-18:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records

Some album tracks included are Cuckoo Cocoon, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, That’s All and In Too Deep among others. My copy did not come with a Cue Sheet, however, it did come with a Satellite News Roundup sheet, pictured in the Gallery. From my personal collection.

Said entry can be found here:
Genesis: Up-Close #88-31:
Media America Radio Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 25 July 1988
pre-FM Double Compact Disc
Another in the Up Close series with Dan Neer. Neer profiles the latest Genesis release (at that time) INVISIBLE TOUCH, while also exploring some of their better known albums from the 1980’s in this two hour, two disk radio special. Interview clips with Phil, Mike and Tony are interspersed between tracks from several Genesis albums as well as Phil’s first two solo efforts. The band members do not appear in the studio with Neer, but on some interview clips, all three are present at the same time. Contains original commercial blocks.
Album tracks include Invisible Touch, Abacab, Throwing It All Away, In The Air Tonight and All I Need Is A Miracle.
This show, like the below listed Up Close from 1992, was sent to radio stations in a “fatboy” double compact disc case.
While I do not have a copy of the original Cue Sheets for this show in my collection, I have included pics from a recent eBay listing which shows them. This is important as the sheets list the show number and original broadcast date, neither of which appear on the discs themselves. From my personal collection.
Complete track listing can be found here:

Genesis (And Other Artists): A Night With The Best Of British Rock:
Radio Today Entertainment Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month / Day 1988
pre-FM Double Compact Disc
This is a rare one-off, 90 minute radio special from Radio Today Entertainment which includes interviews with and music by various British artists including Phil, Mike and Tony, along with Steve Winwood, Roger Daltrey and Joe Jackson. Presented by Michelob beer. Contains original commercial blocks and DJ intros by Tony Pigg. The interview segments are conducted by radio personality Dan Fermento.
Each commercial block contains a Michelob beer advertisement which features tracks by Ray Charles, Steve Winwood and Wang Chung. Michelob beer utilized several tracks from British artists during the late ’80s to promote their beer, and they were also a promoter of the ’86-’87 INVISIBLE TOUCH Tour.
Album tracks include Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Land Of Confusion, In The Air Tonight and Turn It On Again.
I chose to put this one in the Genesis section of radio shows despite the fact that Phil is featured discussing his solo work because both Mike and Tony are also featured discussing the band. From my personal collection.

Off The Record Hosted By Mary Turner #OTR 1-9 / #OTR 1-16:
Westwood One Radio Networks Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast – Side A: Week of 9 January 1989 / Side B: Week of 16 January 1989
pre-FM Single Vinyl LP
Here is another of the single LP versions of the Off The Record daily shows which were sent to radio stations to supplement the double LP versions. Similar to the one listed above from 1982, this LP does not contain complete music tracks, nor does it contain an opening segment, commercials or end credits. In addition, this LP does not have one continuous side on each side of the LP, rather, each track is its own separate “locked groove” or “lock banded” track which forced the disc jockey to lift the needle and place it down again in order to play each consecutive track. The one difference here is that the brief Mary Turner “intro” that was presented before each interview segment is now part of the interview track. Prior to this, the intro and the interview were separate tracks. I don’t have any details on when this format was changed on these single LP versions.
Again, the single LP version of this show, known only as Off The Record, was a daily mini-show with ten (10) interview segments on each side of the LP, all introduced by Turner, for a total of twenty (20) interview segments. Each artists appeared several times on one side of the LP. Also of note was that this particular LP was the first one I have purchased that came with the original Cue Sheet, which shows how different this show was from the double LP version.
The tracks on this LP consist of Turner giving a brief explanation of what the next track contains, followed by brief interview segments from numerous artists. The artists featured on this single LP are Robert Plant, Mike Rutherford, Tommy Conwell, Bill Payne and Fred Tackett (of Little Feat) Simon Kirke and Brian Howe (of Bad Company) and Edie Brickell. Mike’s four interview bits all appear on Side A. Any music featured was played behind the artist talking. Lastly, there are no commercial blocks presented on this LP.
Also of note, Side A of this LP was to be aired the week of 9 January 1989, while Side B was to be aired a week later, during the week of 16 January 1989. This also differs from later incarnations of this series, which usually contained two LPs which were to be aired on the same date.
From my personal collection.
The Genesis Story – Together And Solo:
United Stations Programming Network (USPN) Records
Unknown recording date
Original Broadcast –
Week of 17-19 March 1989
pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP
Dave Charity (interviewer) chronicles the band’s career and discusses many of the same topics as the previously listed USPN Records release entitled The Phil Collins & Genesis Story. The show also contains much of the same material featured in the COLLINS ON COLLLINS Exclusive Candid Interview LP as well, along with commercials and studio tracks from several Genesis albums as well as its solo member’s offerings. Phil, Mike and Tony are all interviewed, along with Peter Gabriel and Philip Bailey for this three hour, three LP radio show.
Album tracks include Follow You, Follow Me, That’s All, Your Own Special Way and Man On The Corner along with Sledgehammer, The Living Years and Take Me Home among others. From my personal collection.

Modern Drummer Sound Supplement: Drum Duet
Evatone Sound Sheets Records
Recorded Live at Wembley Stadium, July 1987
Original Release –
July 1990
pre-FM Special 7″ Magazine Insert
This next entry is not a radio broadcast interview special, nor a specific pre-FM live concert. It is, however, a unique one-off 7″ recording of Phil and Chester’s famous Drum Duet from the 1987 INVISIBLE TOUCH Tour show at Wembley Stadium in July of 1987. The recording was produced on a flimsy, clear vinyl insert which was included inside copies of the July 1990 issue of Modern Drummer magazine. (The included scan of the individual 7″ makes it appear to be white in color, but it is definitely completely clear. This can be more clearly seen in the attached photo of the magazine opened to the article in question, which is where the 7″ was inserted. I’ve also included scans of the full interviews of both Phil and Chester from the magazine.)
The A-side audio is taken from Phil and Chester’s Drum Duet from the Wembley Stadium show featured in the official video release VISIBLE TOUCH. This includes Phil’s slight “hiccup” when playing his portion of a solo in the early part of the duet. The lone track quickly fades out just as Los Endos begins. There is no music on the B-side of the 7″.
This item is incredibly rare and a funky little piece of Genesis history, thus my inclusion here. From my personal collection.

Rolling Stone Magazine Article
Published: 20 February 1992
This is another magazine article, this time from Rolling Stone featured in the 20 February 1992 issue. This is the only article to ever feature the band at the time of their WE CAN’T DANCE album. I remember being very upset that the magazine did not feature the band on their cover at any time in the 80’s or 90’s, and again, this was the only article to even feature the band. (There was one other article about the boys, a rather scathing review of a live Genesis show from the Invisible Touch Tour, and a scan of that article can be found on the listing for The Genesis Event on my page entitled THE REST OF MY RADIO SHOW COLLECTION.) In this article, the boys discuss the album, the critics reception of same, and the future of the band. You can view a scan of this article in the gallery to the right.

Talking Music Records
Recording date: Unknown Month/Day 1992
Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day 1998
pre-FM Single Compact Disc
An unknown female interviewer meets with the boys at an undisclosed location about a myriad of topics including Tony’s “upcoming” release STILL, (which he states is coming out in March – firmly establishing the recording date of this interview in late 1991 or early 1992), Phil offering his services to various bands, his double LIVE AID appearances and his bit part in The Beatles’ film A HARD DAY’S NIGHT, solo material, writing credits on the albums, and success. Oddly enough, no mention is made about the latest release (at that time) from the band, which would have been their last studio album with Phil, WE CAN’T DANCE.
The recording starts and ends rather abruptly and contains no music. From my personal collection.
