GENESIS RADIO INTERVIEW SPECIALS – Various Dates

THE REST OF MY RADIO SHOW COLLECTION

As I mentioned way back at the beginning of this guide, I started this journey to document all of Phil’s pre-FM radio broadcasts. I soon realized that to do it justice, I would need to include those radio specials where Phil participated in an interview or discussion regarding his life’s work. It became a daunting task, especially when it came time to reproduce this list here. But I believe that what follows is the most extensive list of Phil Collins pre-FM Radio Interview Specials ever compiled. (I have also created a similar page containing all of the known Genesis pre-FM interview specials, both with and without Phil being present.)
As you will see, Phil did a lot of promotion via these interview shows throughout the years… all the way up to and including his final Not Dead Yet Tour. Many of the interview specials contained pre-recorded bits of Phil talking which were strategically placed to make it sound as if Phil was actually present in the studio with the host. (The most notorious of these were the Off The Record Specials with host Mary Turner.) But every now and then, Phil did actually sit down to be interviewed in person, starting with the first show on the list.
As with the previously listed radio concerts, all of the interview specials are listed in order of broadcast date. That said, one of the main differences is that with these shows, the recording date was almost always unknown.
I have also included a few magazine interview articles that I have collected over the years, in the appropriate place by date of publication. There didn’t seem a more appropriate place to post these for your enjoyment. You can view scans of the articles in the gallery to the right of each entry.
Here is a complete listing of all known radio interview shows with Phil Collins. If you know of any that I’ve missed, please hit me up via the Contact Me page:

The Billboard Report:

London Wavelength Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –

2 – 15 February 1981

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

The earliest known pre-FM partial interview special focusing on Phil’s career and his first solo album FACE VALUE comes to us courtesy of the the London Wavelength label with a show entitled The Billboard Report.

I didn’t have a lot of information about this LP, except that it apparently has some small interview clips featuring Phil, Steve Winwood, The Outlaws, UFO, Earl Slick and Michael Schenker. Information was limited as I found this listing on Discogs, so I reached out to a seller there who sent me the following details regarding Phil’s input:

“This is a one sided, 10 track interview LP with one interview with each artist used to broadcast as a fill-in to daily events. Phil has one segment (the 3rd one) on the disc speaking about songs that ended up on FACE VALUE instead of [on a]Genesis [album].”

Hot News!:

Hot News Radio Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
Side A: Week of 2 March 1981 / Side B: Week of 9 March 1981

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

Another early pre-FM partial interview special focusing on Phil’s career and his first solo album FACE VALUE, this time courtesy of the the Jim Brown Hot News! series.

Although the LP labels state that the host of this show is Jim Brown, the man on the record identifies himself as Jeff Hillary. Hillary therefore plays pre-recorded interview clips featuring Phil discussing the album and his time with Genesis. There are also single commercial blocks for Oxy Face Wash included in each segment. The LP also comes with two pages of detailed explanations of what is featured therein. This LP does not have one continuous side on each side of the LP, rather, each track is its own separate “locked groove” or “lock banded” track which forced the disc jockey to lift the needle and place it down again in order to play each consecutive track. In addition, each track was slotted to be played on a specific day during the week. All of Phil’s segments appear on Side A, which was scheduled to be aired the week of 2 March 1981. Released on Translucent vinyl. From my personal collection.

This item is not currently listed on Discogs.

B.B.C. Rock Hour Special #213 (Version B) – Phil Collins:

London Wavelength Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
29 March 1981

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

The earliest known pre-FM complete interview special focusing on Phil’s career and his first solo album FACE VALUE comes to us courtesy of the B.B.C. Rock Hour Special series.

Host Richard Skinner interviews Phil in person and plays tracks from the album. Tracks include Hand In Hand and I Missed Again among others. The LP also comes with three pages of detailed history on Phil’s career and the album. Great, rare item from my personal collection. (It took me years to find a copy of this LP, and I now have two in my collection.)

Off The Record Hosted By Mary Turner #OTR 4-6 / #OTR 4-13:

Westwood One Radio Networks Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
Side A: Week of 6 April 1981 / Side B: Week of 13 April 1981

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

I originally thought this was an early incarnation of what would later become the double LP series known as Off The Record Specials with Mary Turner. Investigation has revealed that these single LP versions were actually daily short-form shows which were sent to radio stations to supplement the double LP versions. Unlike those later shows, (which you will find many more of below) this LP does not contain complete music tracks, nor does it contain an opening segment, commercials or end credits. In addition, this LP does not have one continuous side on each side of the LP, rather, each track is its own separate “locked groove” or “lock banded” track which forced the disc jockey to lift the needle and place it down again in order to play each consecutive track.

Again, the single LP version of this show, known only as Off The Record, was a daily mini-show with ten (10) interview segments on each side of the LP, all introduced by host Mary Turner, for a total of twenty (20) interview segments. Each artists appeared several times on one side of the LP.

Turner was originally a disc jockey at KMET, the album-oriented rock station that was the soundtrack of Southern California in the 1970s and early ’80s. She was known as “The Burner,” a nickname said to have been given to her by Peter Wolf, the lead singer of the J. Geils Band, for her seductive delivery and good looks. When major bands came to town to perform or promote a new record, they made a stop at KMET to be interviewed by Turner.

This was one of two rock interview shows she hosted, the other being the double LP version entitled Off the Record Specials with Mary Turner. Both were syndicated by Westwood One, a company founded by the media entrepreneur Norman Pattiz, whom Turner married in 1985. The shows were broadcast in every major market in the United States and 40 countries through the American Forces Radio and Television Service, giving Turner a worldwide audience of more than 20 million. She left KMET on 6 August 1982, but continued the Off The Record series of shows well into the 90’s. Turner passed away on 9 May 2023 from cancer. You can read more about her amazing career in her obituaries, found here:

L.A. Times Obituary

New York Times Obituary

The double LP versions of these shows have been favorites of mine for some time now, and it’s interesting to see these shorter, single LP versions and how they differed. The  tracks on this LP consist of Turner giving a brief explanation of what the next track contains, followed by brief interview segments from numerous artists. The artists featured on this single LP are John Illsley and Pick Withers (of Dire Straits)Manfred MannNeil Peart (of Rush)Paul Dean (of Loverboy)Phil Collins and Ted Nugent. Phil’s four interview bits all appear on Side B. Any music featured was played behind the artist talking. Lastly, there are no commercial blocks presented on this LP.

Also of note, Side A of this LP was to be aired the week of 6 April 1981, while Side B was to be aired a week later, during the week of 13 April 1981. This also differs from later incarnations of this series, which usually contained two LPs which were to be aired on the same date. From my personal collection.

Phil Collins Interview Picture Disc:

Baktabak Records (BAK 2020)

Limited Edition Vinyl

Recorded November 1982

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

This is technically not a radio interview special per-se, it’s actually an unofficial bootleg. That said, it does contain and interview with Phil, and it is on vinyl, so technically radio stations could have used the contents for broadcast.

An unidentified interviewer meets with Phil in person and discusses his life, working with Robert Plant, Frida and Eric Clapton, drumming and Phil’s latest release (at that time) HELLO, I MUST BE GOING.

The basis for listing the recording date as sometime in November 1982 is based on two main statements on Side 1. The first is when Phil says: “I’m thirty-one now…” (having been born in January of 1951 puts the current year at 1982) and the second is when Phil says: “The album came in at number two today… It’s the first week…” As mentioned above, HELLO, I MUST BE GOING was released on 5 November of 1982, therefore, this interview was likely recorded within a few weeks of its release.

Note that the image on Side 2 of the LP is clearly from later in Phil’s career… possibly from the ’85 NO JACKET REQUIRED Tour or the ’86 INVISIBLE TOUCH Tour.

It’s a fascinating interview with lots of material that focuses heavily on HELLO, I MUST BE GOING. As with many of the Baktabak interviews, this recording starts and ends rather abruptly, especially at the end of Side 1, which cuts off in mid-question but does pick up in the same spot at the start of Side 2. From my personal collection.

Jim Ladd Hosts Innerview – Phil Collins:

Inner View Records
(Series #23, Show #7)

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day 1982

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

Jim Ladd, who was also the host of the aforementioned Captured Live! #CL-1684 concert radio program, hosts an interview special focusing on Phil’s career and his latest (at that time) album HELLO, I MUST BE GOING. While the copyright on the LP states 1976 as seen in the scans below, this program was definitely produced in late 1982, as Ladd clearly focuses most of his questions on Side One about Phil’s second album. (HELLO, I MUST BE GOING was released on 5 November 1982, therefore, this special could not have been recorded too far prior to that. In addition, Ladd hosted Innerview, an hour-long nationally syndicated interview program, from 1974 until 1984.)

Once again, Phil is present in the room with Ladd, and the two have a lengthy conversation about the record, with details about several songs revealed. Side Two focuses on Phil’s time with Genesis, and includes the most detailed explanation I’ve ever heard about the meaning behind the title of the song Abacab.

Tracks include I Don’t Care Anymore, Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away, In The Air Tonight, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Follow You, Follow Me, Abacab and Misunderstanding.

As a side note, Jim Ladd served as the inspiration for the 2002 Tom Petty album THE LAST DJ and its title track, and – like Phil – has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

Great, rare item from my personal collection.

Rolling Stone Magazine Article

Published: 3 February 1983

As I mentioned above, I have a few magazine articles that feature Phil which I have collected over the years, and since they all contain interviews (of sorts) with Phil, I will include them here.

Phil Collins & Steve Winwood Inside Track Interview Special:

D.I.R. Broadcasting Networks Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast
Week of 21 February 1983

pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP (Side 6 is blank)

The first of three such Inside Track interview specials which I own.

Host Lisa Robinson meets with and chronicles the careers of Phil Collins and Steve Winwood separately and discusses their lives and music. The recording definitely sounds as if Robinson is in the same room at the same time with the artists. Phil discusses his time with Genesis, playing with Robert Plant, and his painful divorce – which led to his monumental first solo album, FACE VALUE.

The show contains studio tracks from several of Phil’s and Steve’s albums including No Reply At All, In The Air Tonight and I Don’t Care Anymore along with While You See A Chance, Arc Of A Diver and Gimmie Some Lovin’. There are no commercial blocks on these LPs. Phil’s portion of the show is contained on Sides 1 & 2, while Winwood’s interview takes up Sides 3-5. A rare and hard to find gem. Off The Record Specials With Mary Turner #83-10:

Westwood One Radio Networks Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast
Week of 28 February 1983

pre-FM Double Vinyl LP

One of the earliest know incarnations of the double LP Off The Record Specials series featuring Phil Collins. This series of interview specials ran weekly and lasted for at least ten years, during which host Mary Turner “interviewed” hundreds of rock artists including Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Sting, Robert Plant, Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Bryan Adams, John Cougar Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Pete Townshend, Peter Gabriel, Jeff Beck, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Sir Paul McCartney and many, many more.

(To give some ides of the vast amount of these shows, and the wide range of artists interviewed, have a look at this Discogs series profile page HERE.)

As you will see, Phil and Genesis were featured numerous times throughout the show’s run, and many of the interview segments were recycled.

Unlike some of the other listed interview specials, this series was designed to sound like Turner actually got each artist into the studio to interview them in person. But a close examination of the sound reveals that the interview clips were all pre-recorded. (You can read more about Turner and her legacy higher up on this page in the listing for the single LP version of this show, simply titled Off The Record.)

In this installment, Mary Turner presents an interview with Phil where she discusses his life and his music, along with his first two solo releases.

Tracks include I Don’t Care Anymore, In The Air Tonight, Don’t Let Him Steal Your Heart Away and I’m Not Moving. From my personal collection.

In this second installment from the Inside Track series which I own, Host Lisa Robinson meets with and chronicles the careers of Phil Collins and Robert Plant separately and discusses their lives and music. Like the other Inside Track special listed above, this recording also sounds as if Robinson is in the same room at the same time with the artists.

The show contains commercials and studio tracks from several of Phil’s and Robert’s albums including Like China, I Missed Again and a live version of No Reply At All along with The Song Remains The Same, Big Log and In The Mood.

Phil’s portion of the show is the last segment of the show on sides D and E. Side F is blank. A rare and hard to find gem. From my personal collection.

The show contains commercials and studio tracks from several of Phil’s albums. Unlike the OTRSP shows, no attempt is made to appear as if the host and Phil appear in the studio together. The interview bits are intermingled with loads of album tracks. Some of the tracks included are Man On The Corner, Easy Lover and In The Air Tonight among others. From my personal collection.

A rare item from the BBC archives, this set contains a single LP with music from Dire Straits and an interview with front-man Mark Knopfler, along with a single LP featuring music and an interview with Phil.

All of the album tracks included are culled from Phil’s second solo effort, HELLO I MUST BE GOING. These songs include Like China, I Don’t Care Anymore and Thru These Walls among others. (It’s possible that the Phil Collins portion of this show is a repackaging of the aforementioned B.B.C Roc Hour Special #349, but without hearing the interview, it is unknown at this time.) Phil Collins & Peter Wolf Inside Track Interview Special:

D.I.R. Broadcasting Networks Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
23 July 1984

pre-FM Triple Vinyl LP (Side 6 is blank)

The third installment (that I own) in the Inside Track series of shows.

Host Lisa Robinson meets with and chronicles the careers of Phil Collins and Peter Wolf (of J. Geils fame) separately and discusses their lives and music. As with the previous two installments, the recording definitely sounds as if Robinson is in the same room at the same time with the artists.

Phil discusses his time with Genesis, producing numerous artists, and his decision to stay with Genesis, while Wolf discusses leaving The J. Geils Band and starting his solo career. The show contains studio tracks from several of Phil’s and J. Geils’ albums, including Against All Odds, I Missed Again and Genesis hits No Reply At All, Illegal Alien and Man On The Corner, along with a few tracks from Wolf’s first solo album, LIGHTS OUT. Original commercial blocks for Heineken are also included.

Exclusive Candid Interview – Limited Edition Vinyl

Recorded 1985

pre-FM Single Vinyl LP

This LP was sent to radio stations under the Atlantic Records label, which makes it an “official release”, and therefore it is not hard to come by. Many listings for this exact LP still show up on eBay on a regular basis.

Host and Interviewer Dan Neer (who appeared on some later King Biscuit shows and who appears later on this list in the Up Close series of interview shows) meets with Phil and discusses his time with Genesis, his first solo album FACE VALUE, and his latest release (at that time) NO JACKET REQUIRED

Side A of this recording features Neer asking questions and Phil answering them. Side B features the answers only, which allowed DJ’s to create their own “live interview” as if Phil was right there with them in the studio. After this release in 1985, the answers on this recording were frequently and heavily reused on dozens of other interview specials, many of which are listed below. I cannot stress this part enough – a vast majority of the interview clips that appeared on future radio specials were taken directly from this album. They were spliced into the shows in order to create the sense that Phil was in the room talking to the host. (In order to better illustrate this fact, when future interview specials rely heavily on the material featured on this LP, I will note same.) So If you’re looking for one, definitive Phil Collins interview special to own on vinyl, this is it.

This LP does not contain any commercials or album tracks, and as such, was not necessarily intended to be returned or destroyed after use. From my personal collection.

Rock Salutes Motown ’85 Hosted By Phil Collins:

NBC Radio Entertainment Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
20-22 September 1985

pre-FM Quintuple Vinyl LP

NBC Radio Entertainment and their series entitled The Source* presents a three hour, five LP radio broadcast featuring dozens of original Motown hits and versions as interpreted by various artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Who, Eddie Money, David Lee Roth, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart and many, many more.

Hosted by Phil, a noted Motown aficionado in his own right, the show features original commercial blocks and tons of historical information as provided by Phil about “the Motown sound”, as well as multiple interviews with those artists and more. The interview segments are all pre-recorded and edited into the show, and Collins makes no attempt to present the interviews as if those artists are present in the studio with him. While Phil himself is not interviewed on this show, he does provide tons of details about Motown artists, their impact on music, and the numerous artists who covered their songs.

An incredible rare set with loads of Phil discussing all things Motown. From my personal collection.

*Regarding the series The Source, the immensely popular Genesis show from the Lyceum Ballroom was featured on The Source radio show in July of 1980.

MISPRINT INFO: Of note is the fact that the labels state: BROADCAST DATE: SEPT. 20, 21, 22, 1984, but the first Cue Sheet indicates the year was 1985, not 1984. The labels most likely contained a misprint regarding the date, as the labels also state the title as ROCK SALUTES MOTOWN ’85 as well as stating © 1985 Denny Somach Productions. Thus, the broadcast / release date was most likely 1985.

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast –
Week of 16 July 1988

pre-FM Quadruple Vinyl LP

This set contains a four hour weekly radio show featuring host Scott Muni, with special guest Phil Collins and call-in guest Jimmy Page.

The Phil Collins interview segments were pre-recorded and occurred backstage at the Royal Albert Hall on the night of and just prior to the recording The Prince’s Trust Rock Concert. Collins discusses his upcoming film and soundtrack, BUSTER, recording with George Harrison early in his post-Beatles career on ALL THINGS MUST PASS, appearing at the Atlantic Records 40th Anniversary concert, as well as his time working with the Prince’s Trust.

Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page also calls in and discusses his latest release (at the time) OUTRIDER, playing with Jason Bonham and an upcoming tour.

Muni plays tracks from various artists, has fellow disc jockeys call in, and provides historical facts about the artists. Of note is the fact that the end of Side D contains an End Credits sequence which was designed to be played by stations not wishing to broadcast the entire four hour show. However, stations that did so had to broadcast the remaining two hours at a later time in order to account for the Page call in. Contains original commercial blocks. There are also tracks by numerous other artists featured, including Bob Dylan, Blind Faith, Joe Cocker, Elton John, Pink Floyd and others. From my personal collection.

Album tracks include Take Me Home, I Wish It Would Rain Down and Something Happened On The Way To Heaven.

Phil Collins: Profiled (PR3092-2):

Atlantic Records

Unknown recording date

Original Broadcast – Unknown Month/Day  (Possibly February) 1990

pre-FM Single Compact Disc

Dan Neer once again chronicles Phil’s career, his music and his latest release (at that time), BUT SERIOUSLY… on another official Atlantic Records release.

Neer’s voice is not present anywhere on the disc, but detailed questions are listed in the liner notes. (See the pics in the Gallery to the right for scans of the booklet inside and outside. Keep in mind that the booklet is a tri-fold insert, so when you look at the scans, you are looking at all three pages folded flat.)

Again, the disc is an official release from Atlantic Records for promotional use, and contains studio tracks from the listed album along with interview segments.

The first track on this disc is the full “interview” featuring Phil discussing tracks from the album. Those tracks are Another Day In Paradise, Find A Way To My Heart, Something Happened On The Way To Heaven and I Wish It Would Rain Down. The next set of tracks (02-08) are radio promo spots and the remaining tracks (Track 09-19) contain the interview answers only, and are much more detailed than the profile on the first track. Coupled together, the entire set creates an intimate interview that radio station DJs used to promote the album and imply that Phil was actually sitting in the studio. Similar to the COLLINS ON COLLINS LP in that it contains an “Answers Only” selection of tracks. It also contains a “profile” track which has Phil speaking about making the album along with the aforementioned studio tracks. From my personal collection.

Canadian promotional release containing several tracks from other artists (Peter Frampton, Sattalites, K.D. Lang and others) along with a twenty-five minute interview segment with Phil near the end of the CD, plus a track containing radio station liners read by Phil.

The interview segment in question and the station liners are identical to the above listed Profiled disc. Why they would choose to stick the Profiled segments onto the tail end of a compilation disc is something I’ll never understand, especially since the previous Canadian versions of these type of shows were their own separate releases. pre-FM 7″ Single Vinyl

This 7″ single, which is most likely a bootleg item,  is the oddest of all of the Phil Collins interviews I have come across. The same segment and labels appear on both sides of the vinyl. The brief interview (clocking in at only 6:13) consists of an unidentified man and woman – both with British accents – speaking to Phil in what appears to be a bathroom or water closet! In fact, the interviewer starts off the segment by saying: “Welcome to another edition of In The Toilet With…”

As further proof of the surroundings, the interviewer first flushes a toilet, and at the end of the segment, asks Phil to do so as well, and Phil complies. The odd interview then continues to briefly discuss Phil’s 1989 release BUT SERIOUSLY…

The recording appears to have been made on a night when Phil won Best Solo Artist and one other trophy for Favorite Track of 1989 by Radio One Listeners for the song Another Day In Paradise, because the interviewer alludes to both awards as Phil having just won them, but it is unclear at which award show the interview was conducted. The vinyl is completely white, as can be seen in the provided scan. From my personal collection.

Original Broadcasts – January 2015 – February 2016

Internet Stream Captures

Captured directly from nationally syndicated radio personality Redbeard’s In The Studio website, host Redbeard interviews Phil in person on three separate occasions to discuss various aspects of his career.

The first interview relates to the thirtieth anniversary of Phil’s album NO JACKET REQUIRED, and was posted to Redbeard’s website on 18 January 2015.

The second interview centers on the 2016 reissue (and thirty-fifth anniversary) of Phil’s first solo effort FACE VALUE, and was posted on 24 January 2016.

The last interview deals with the 2016 reissue of Phil’s second LP  HELLO, I MUST BE GOING and was posted to the site on 21 February 2016.

All three interview specials were ultimately made available to radio stations on compact disc for broadcast, and the interview segments clearly have sections where commercials and studio tracks were inserted. However, as I do not have these discs in my collection, I captured the audio from the website using the Goldwave Audio program. The interviews themselves are very detailed and extensive in terms of topics discussed. From my personal collection.

You can listen to these three interviews, along with several other PC and Genesis related interviews HERE
